Time evaporates. No matter how much we wish it were different time moves on despite our plans and despite our circumstances. The question is will 2020 be any different to 2019? It is so easy to get caught up in the day to day minutiae that we forget to look at the bigger picture of our own lives. I don’t get to hit reset on this life. I don’t get to repeat not even one minute in my life. What I can do is aim to focus and move forwards. What I can minimise is looking back. What holds people back is not declaring what they want and instead repeating what they don’t want. The remedy is having a clear why.
Your why is the remedy to lack of motivation and procrastination because it pulls you into the future and energises you when you thought you had no energy left. Buddha said to be human is to suffer and I agree. Life gets tough. I remember being 31 and sitting on my mum’s lap and sharing with her that being an adult was hard and sometimes I just wanted to come back home so she could take care of me. No-one is coming to save the day, so we need to be our own saviour. Declare your why.
Your why is the answer to why you do what you do. Do you work in a job because you are driven to provide your family with security, fun and an inheritance? Are your retired because you want to live the best life you can while you still can? Are you an entrepreneur because you want the freedom and choice to live on your terms, make an impact in the world, and buy time to raise your family? My why is so clear it burns a flame inside me that cannot be extinguished. I worked for almost 30 years in jobs and I wasn’t able to be there for my children. There is nothing that will hold me back from being there for my kids now as they are young adults starting their own family and adult lives.
Take some time to consider and feel into what drives you forward. Many people can’t easily articulate what they want. Take out a pen and paper and consider these questions. Take your time savour defining and declaring your why. What would living your dream life look like? What will get you bouncing out of bed feeling happy every single day? What is it that you look forward to doing or having that would make you feel excited? The biggest question to answer is, if you never needed to earn another cent in your life what will have you bounce out of bed with excitement? Your why is not a holiday it is a way of living your life.
Choose your why and you will live each day deliberately, moving forwards and living on purpose each day.
